PAVAUK/BASB Seminar

Abuse or Crime? Why isn’t it both?

20th October 2009

For the second year, PAVAUK co-hosted an annual seminar with the Birmingham Safeguarding Adults Board at the Aston Villa Football Ground. The PAVAUK AGM was held at the event. The reports presented at the AGM have been included in this newsletter.

The seminar’s evaluation forms asked for scorings on a range of 1 = Poor to 5 = Excellent.

The seminar had three key-note presentations: Joanna Perry on the CPS Policy on Crimes against Older People; An Ferguson on the Scottish Experience of drafting Safeguarding legislation and Tracy Organ on the changing role of the Coroner’s Court in Safeguarding. It would not be appropriate to quote the ratings of each speaker, but, on relevance to their job, 62% of the completed forms rated them as a 4 or 5; 70% rated them as a 4 or a 5 for relevance to its title and 78% rated them as a 4 or a 5 for being informative.

The seminar had 7 workshops that were run once or twice each: Successful Prosecutions under S44 of the Mental Capacity Act; Forced Marriage Protection Orders; Appropriate Adults and Safeguarding; SARCS and Safeguarding; the Criminal Investigation of Institutional Abuse; Safeguarding in the Prison System and the CPS Policy on Crimes against Adults with a Learning Disability or a Mental Health Problem. Again, it would not be appropriate to quote the ratings of each speaker, but, on relevance to their job, 71% of the completed forms rated them as a 4 or 5; 75 % rated them as a 4 or a 5 for relevance to its title but only 66% rated them as a 4 or a 5 for being informative.

Overall, the seminar would appear to have been a success; comments from the evaluation forms include: “a practical, informative seminar, rather than the usual, predictable topics and speakers”; “best seminar attended on safeguarding by far!”; ”will make reflect on practice”; “I was really impressed by the content of the seminar and will look into joining PAVA” and “excellent day – thank you”.

Among the suggested themes for next year’s seminar were: managing safeguarding boards; safeguarding in the context of personalisation; the interface between safeguarding and the MCA/DoLS; Domestic Violence and safeguarding; the interface between local authorities and CQC and measuring outcomes in safeguarding.

I think the above demonstrates the success of the day, and I’d like to thank the speakers and workshop facilitators who contributed to that, as well as my fellow Trustees for their assistance before and on the day. As always, it is the people you don’t see who actually make events like this run efficiently, and I’d also like to thank Suzanne and Sarbjit who handled the administration for the day and the staff at Aston Villa who were so helpful on the day.

The one regret I have is that we won’t be able to accommodate the request of 2 attendees – we can’t extend the seminar to 2 days to enable attendance at more workshops!
